Former Governor of Borno state, Mohammed Goni is dead.
Goni, who was aged 78 died on Wednesday night around 8 p.m at the University of Maiduguri teaching hospital, POLITICS NIGERIA gathered.
Although the cause of his death has not yet been revealed, Goni was ill. He was elected governor of Borno state in 1979 (the Nigerian second republic) but lost his second term election. He also contested for governor of the state in 2011 under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, but lost the election.
His death was confirmed by a family member, Kareto Lawan. Also a retired civil servant, Goni was born in Mobbar local government area, Borno state. He was the first civilian governor of the state and founded the popular Borno Radio Television (BRTV).
He was also a member of the committee that drafted the 1995 Nigerian Constitution.
