It seemed as though the door was closed, but Spider-Man is officially continuing in the MCU with a third movie.
The announcement was jointly made today (September 27) by Sony Pictures Entertainment and The Walt Disney Studios, ending weeks of concern for Spider-Man fans about Tom Holland's future as the web slinger
It seems as though the third movie will be part of Phase 4, as the release date has been set for July 16, 2021 – after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness but before Thor: Love and Thunder
As part of the new deal between Sony and Disney, Spider-Man will also appear in a future Marvel Studios movie, but we don't know which one yet.
As with the first two movies with Holland as Peter Parker, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige will co-produce the threequel with Amy Pascal through her company Pascal Pictures.
"I am thrilled that Spidey's journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it," said Feige.
"Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold."
