Erosion: 200 homeless in Onitsha

Two hundred persons have been rendered homeless in Onitsha, Anambra State, following the erosion which destroyed their homes.
Over five houses, including St. Philips Anglican Church belonging to the Redeemed Church in Nkisi Aroli/Obeleagu, Inland Town, and a two-storey building may collapse if nothing is done.
Displaced residents have appealed for Governor Willie Obiano’s intervention. They urged President Muhammed Buhari, through the Ecological Fund Office, to come to their rescue.
The community’s spokesman, Arthur Mazeli, said they had written to the National Assembly through their representatives, Lynda Ikpeazu and Stella Odua.
“Some government officials, including commissioners for Environment and Agriculture, commissioner of Police, have visited the site. Efforts so far made are purely communal but they are so infinitesimal to the magnitude of the scourge,” he lamented.
Mazeli, who debunked insinuations that some structures were built on water channel, explained that the drainage, which collected water from the upper part of Inland Town, gave way due to the force of the flood.
